This CD features the entire July 15, 1970 rehearsal from Culver City. Sound quality is pretty good. Listening to this CD is like being in the room with Elvis and the band. All I have to do is close my eyes and lean back. He starts out pretty straight, set on getting some work done here, but it doesn't take long before he starts messing around with the lyrics, having fun. That’s when the fun starts for me too, because I love listening to this sort of stuff. 'The Next Step Is Sex' is especially juicy. 'You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me' is filled with infectious laughter. And it doesn't stop there.
This rehearsal has got it all: humor, seriousness, determination, rare songs, you name it. The best part is that most or all of it is captured on film. Dare we hope for a That's the Way It Is—Deluxe Edition DVD containing all the material that was filmed for this documentary? I say we do.
