THE FINAL CURTAIN (BOXCAR) (Released 2011)
|
Book / 6 DVDs / 6 CDs
A 400-page book with 6 CDs and 6 DVDs with hours of footage (also prev. unreleased) and soundboards (also new) all housed in a large and heavy beautiful box set. The book is packed with more than a thousand pictures, reviews and full text featuring all the tours. The layout is very nice, printed on silk paper and released as a hard-back book.
In essence, the CDs feature mainly the earlier tours, where as the DVDs focus on the later ones. The previously unreleased soundboards are coming from the shows of Orlando (February 15), Saginaw (May 3) and Madison (June 24).
The Madison show from June 24 is the only complete Elvis show from 1977 to exist on soundboard and also the last known soundboard recording concert of Elvis to be released. Although the tape suffered some damage, the sound quality is acceptable. Jerome "Stump" Munroe played drums instead of Ronnie Tutt this evening.
The 6 DVDs includes 8mm footage with more than 2 hours of unreleased footage. All material have been synced with correct sound. DVDs are dual-layered. Included is also 36 minutes of unreleased footage from Indianapolis.
The DVDs also includes the CBS TV-Special from October 1977, using a first generation copy of the TV Station broadcast. It has been re-mastered frame by frame.
The Omaha (June 19) and Rapid City (June 21) show comes from a tape source several generations better than previously released. Also restored and re-mastered frame by frame and including new - unreleased - footage from Rapid City, making this show practically complete. The new footage found from Omaha now makes this show 100% complete! |

DVD-6 (BONUS DVD):
"Elvis Is Dead"
A collection of news reports from local and major TV stations on the passing of Elvis Presley, recorded in August 1977
Brief comments on the content:
CD-1 feature material previously found in similar sound on Coming On Strong and Cajun Tornado. The sound quality on the St. Petersburg show is better here.
CD-2 feature a new soundboard source for the Orlando show. Earlier some tracks have been released where only one of the binural channels were available. Also this CD contains bonus tracks. All of them previously released officially or on bootlegs.
CD-3 contains the Montgomery show from Feb. 16, previously available on Coming On Strong and the Charlotte show from Feb. 21. This last was first released on Moody Blue And Other Great Performances by Fort Baxter.
CD-4 sports a new soundboard, this time from Saginaw, May 3. It is an ok show, where Elvis opens with 'That's Alright, Mama' and also sings a few lines of 'Trouble', before launcing into a more familiar program. At the end of this disc even more bonus cuts from multi-track source have been added. One is previously unreleased, namely 'My Way' from Chicago, May 1. The CD also lists 'My Way' from the second Chicago show, but in reality it is the version from April 23 in Toledo, first released by Fort Baxter on Goodbye Memphis (CD-2).
Another brand new soundboard is found on CD-5. This time an almost complete recording. Unfortunately this is one of the poorest shows I have ever heard Elvis perform. He is totally out of energy. The sound quality is acceptable, and it is worth noting that Jerome Munroe plays drums.
CD-6 contains the all too familiar audience recording of Elvis' last show ever. The sound quality is very good for this kind of source.
The DVD's contains hours of amateur footage from mainly May and June 1977. Some of it is in very good quality. Especially one camera angle on the Cincinatti show stands out, while most the of Providence concert comes in great - overall - quality.
The complete CBS recording of both Omaha and Rapid City shows are here. The quality is very good, and leaps better than seen before. The edit is ok, although the selection of camera angle on 'Unchained Melody' is annoying. It manages to miss the biggest moment of the song, where Elvis looks at Charlie Hodge with an unmistakingly look. Also, I do not approve the choice of using 'My Way' from Elvis By The Presley. The original edit is much better in my view.
The last DVD contains a selction of news and comments from TV around the time Elvis died.
All in all a breathtaking delivery from the producers!
