|A strong start!
(Review by Oven Egeland)
ReelTrax first release focus on gospel outtakes from 1966 and 1967. It contains something as rare as previously unreleased studio takes, not very common today, after several years with CD's from FTD. A winning formula!
Starting of with all first 6 takes of the title track, where only two have been previously available on bootlegs and official CD's. Both take 1 and take 2 are complete takes, while the new takes are only false starts. However, it all comes in glorious stereo sound and is worth the CD price alone!
The rest of the CD contains nothing new, however. Outtakes from the How Great Thou Art sessions have been done available on many CD's releases during the last 10 plus years. Even though the 1966 takes comes in mono, the sound quality is generally good and mostly better than other bootlegs featuring the same takes. Of course all takes made available on the FTD label and on other BMG releases are sounding better, but the overall impression of the sound and the completeness is solid.
Perhaps even the live version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' sounds a bit better than before, however most likely due to different computer work and not due to a new (better) source.
All in all I would recommend this CD. Mainly because of the title track. Getting outtakes with "official" sound is not happening very often. Most likely it can take a while until the next time. Be there when it happens..:-)
